Do I love God?
Updated: Mar 4, 2021

For the majority of my life when asked if I love God, my thought or answer would be, “sure I love God!” However, down deep, I always seemed to question and doubt my answer. I thought, if I love God then how come there are no feelings of love for Him and how can I really love someone I can’t see or honestly, I don’t know? I was too ashamed to ask anyone or really admit it to God or myself, until I went to my first ladies Bible Study in my early 30’s and saw first hand someone who truly loves God! I saw someone that was excited and passionate about God and His Words! It became something real and attainable! She encouraged us by saying that if we aren’t in-love with Christ or if we question our love for God, it’s no secret, God already knows our thoughts. We just need to simply admit it to God and ask Him to cultivate a deep love for Him…to show us how to fall in love with Him! To be honest, when I first started praying for God to help me “fall in love with Him” it sounded really awkward to me and I couldn’t comprehend it. But nonetheless I continued to pray for it daily. And over time God did exactly that, cultivated a deep, unexplainable love for Him and I began to understand what loving God really meant! I learned that loving God is not an emotional feeling its is a verb…an action. As I began to fall in love with God and His Word, I began to develop a longing and passion for spending time talking with Him and reading His Word. Which in turn cultivated a deep passion and joy for making choices that please God! The more I read His Word and the more time I spent talking to Him the more that love grew and the more a deep level of joy and peace grew within me as well. Joy and peace so deep that it’s always there for me to take hold of, even in the midst of trials…as long as I keep my focus on God and not on the problem. So I encourage you to pray for God to show you how to love Him, how to talk to Him and how to read and understand His Word. Because to me, that is where true freedom resides! Where we obey and follow God out of love not obligation which in turn leads us to the satisfying and fulfilling life He has planned for you!
Matthew 22:37-39 Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
1 John 5:3-5 Loving God means keeping his commandments, and his commandments are not burdensome. For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith. And who can win this battle against the world? Only those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God.
